History of Queen of Peace
Co-Operative Union Ltd.
All over the Credit Union World, the Credit Union Movement has identified three main groups or people among whom Credit Unions thrive. These are people who have something in common, based on either working together in a company belonging to the same organization, like in a Church or living in the same geographic area or Community.
These are groups of people who often have the same economic and social needs. Because of this common bond and close association with one another, it is easy to build trust for one another in the cause of finding solutions for their common social and economic problems.
Having initiated and assisted in organizing a number of Church and other associational Credit Unions all over Ghana and particularly in the Northern sector, it was clear to Mr. Alphonse Gilbert Azaah that the QUEEN OF PEACE Catholic Church even though small, would be a fertile ground for a Credit Union.
The idea was mooted in 1972 and meetings started with a study group of five people. Gradually the number grew to 25. After 3 months, the anxiety of the group was so high that they decided to start saving as prelude to forming of the Credit Union. Mr. Joseph Yaw Duah was nominated as the CHAIRMAN and Mr. Vincent Mawiena was picked as treasurer. It was later given a boost with the arrival of Rev. Fr Francis Mulders as a resident Priest. He was appointed the treasurer to inspire trust and confidence in the system.
In 1982 the Queen of Peace Credit Union was operational. It later opened its common bond to non-Catholics as a way of positioning itself for business. It is registered at the Department of Co-operatives and is a member of the Credit Union Association of Ghana. After operating in a class room for 34 years, the Union put up its own building in the Queen of Peace Catholic Church premises and relocated in February, 2016.
The Credit Union is well positioned to offer human centered financial services to its members and is redefining and re-awaking Credit Unionism in the Greater Accra Region.
